History
NHN traces its roots to the Community Clothes Closet, which was formed in 1997. Recognizing the community’s need for a single, centralized resource hub, Clothes Closet leadership guided efforts to establish NHN in 2019. The organization accelerated and expanded its launch in 2020 to meet the exploding need for food security and financial stability during the pandemic.
Today
Neighbors Helping Neighbors, is a community resource hub centered on compassion for, caring for, and serving our neighbors. NHN provides hope and a helping hand to eliminate hunger and homelessness by connecting our most vulnerable citizens with resources that nourish, clothe and empower them to move from survival mode to a place where they are able to thrive and prosper.
NHN provides assistance to hundreds of people of all ages in the Mount Horeb Area School District and surrounding communities, such as Barneveld, Blanchardville, Hollandale and Ridgeway. Our services include free food, clothing, footwear and bedding, as well as rent and utility assistance, and referrals to partner social service agencies, including Joining Forces for Families. We’re a proud sponsor of the Community Supper, a meal open to anyone on the third Tuesday each month, and the Giving Tree, which rallies community support to purchase holiday gifts for qualifying individuals.
A volunteer-driven organization, NHN relies on more than 150 individuals – including members of 14 area churches – to facilitate these services. We draw financial support from generous community members, area businesses, fundraising and grants from local and regional agencies and trusts. We have food recovery partnerships with Miller & Sons Supermarket, Kwik Trip and Squashington Farms CSA.
As of late 2024, NHN has provided services to more than 3,300 households this year, thanks to the generosity of area residents and companies who power NHN by donating their time, talents and treasures for the betterment of their neighbors and our communities.
