Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Who does NHN serve?

A: We focus our attention on residents of Mount Horeb and surrounding communities. We serve people in need from other areas when they visit and connect them with services closer to where they live.

Q: Are there income restrictions for shoppers?

A: We provide food to all who come.

Q: What hours is NHN open?

A: Please see our Hours Page.

Q: Do I need an appointment to visit NHN?

A: No, you may come at any time during open hours. If you are in need of assistance at another time, please contact us via email (info@mthorebneighbors.org) or phone (608-437-6114). We do our best to reach out to you the same business day. If calling after 5PM please expect a return call with the next business day.

Q: How often can I come to NHN?

A: We offer one visit per household per week to both the Food Closet and Clothes Closet. You may shop at both places weekly.

Q: Do you offer Spanish translation services?

A: Yes, but only on Saturdays. A staff member who is fluent in Spanish is onsite during open hours on Saturdays to assist shoppers who are not conversant in English.

Q: Are you accepting volunteers?

A: Yes! We’re a volunteer-driven organization that offers nearly 200 opportunities each month to contribute your time. Whatever your ability, availability or interest, we have ways for you to get involved. We especially love when high school students volunteer at NHN to earn their Silver Cord hours. Visit the Volunteer info page on our website to indicate your interest and our team will get in touch with you.

Q: How can I make a monetary donation to NHN?

A:. You can donate using your credit card, debit card or PayPal via our website, or you can mail a donation to Neighbors Helping Neighbors, P.O. Box 196, Mount Horeb, WI 53572.

Q: Are my donations to NHN tax-deductible?

A: Yes, we are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so you may itemize any financial gift or donation of goods for purposes of filing federal or state taxes.

Q: Where/when can I drop off paper bags for use by shoppers?

A: We always appreciate donations of shopping bags. Please bring them to NHN during open hours if at all possible to ensure someone will be present to accept and store those paper bags.

Food Pantry FAQs
Q
: Do I have access to meat?

A: Yes! Every shopper can receive meat. The type of meat available is variable, based on what we receive from suppliers.

Q: Are personal care items available?

A: Yes! We offer a wide selection of products, including toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner, soap, adult incontinence items and women’s menstrual products.

Q: Can I receive diapers?

A: Yes! We have many sizes of baby and toddler diapers available.

Q
: What items can I donate to the Food Closet?

A: Because Second Harvest provides access to food items at significantly reduced rates – and for no charge during the pandemic – we ask that donors target their assistance toward our shoppers’ other needs, such as personal care essentials. We do, however, appreciate specialized home-grown goods such as eggs, meat and fresh produce.

Q: What personal care items does NHN most need?

A: Laundry detergent, dish soap, trash bags, cleaning products, liquid hand soap and body wash.

Q: Can I drop off personal care essentials at locations other than NHN?

A: Yes! Items can be dropped off at NHN during our open hours on Fridays and Saturdays, or during business hours on weekdays at our drop boxes at the Chamber of Commerce (300 E. Main St.) and Vike-Steinich Chiropractic (320 W. Main St.).

Clothes Closet FAQs

Q: What types of clothes will I receive?

A:  Our Clothes Closet carries gently used donated clothing, footwear, bedding and towels from our neighbors.  We have clothing for infants, children, women and men.

Q: Where can I drop off clothes?

A: You can drop clean gently used, in-season clothing at our Clothes Closet during our open hours, Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. If this time does not work for you, please call us at 608-437-6114 to make a drop-off appointment with one of our volunteers.

Q: How can I help the Clothes Closet?

A: We always welcome volunteer help (indicate your interest on the NHN website), donations of gently used clothing, footwear, bedding and towels, and we accept financial donations to NHN.

Q: Are there other non-clothing items?

A: Yes, if you have a need for personal items, and are not utilizing the services of our Food Closet, we can have a volunteer assist you in shopping our Personal Essentials section.

Q: Do you have school supplies?

A: Every August, we distribute age-specific school supplies to those in need; please watch our social media pages for information. Throughout the school year, we often have age-specific school supplies on hand, and we’re willing to buy additional materials for those who need them.
